The top center photo depicts the Academy with Clapboards over the brick. "... it was determined that brick school buildings were not healthy and so the bricks were covered with clapboards. Eventually the clapboards came off."
Duffy-Wescott Post 85 of the American Legion is housed in the the old Bluehill Academy building (built 1833). Its structural and ascetic maintenance has changed over the years and the building is in need of some serious attention.
Started some basic stuff and have:
1. raised funds to complete a Survey to identify the most pressing and future efforts for preserving the Historic Building;
2. corrected drainage issues which damaged the back foundation wall and regularly flooded the basement;
3. dug a much needed well - our first EVER!
4. started exterior brick and Portico work and replaced most of the windows; and
5. replaced the side door and added a new ramp and stairs.
NEXT efforts:
1. repairing the back foundation wall, the basement and the back brick wall itself.
2. finish brickwork....
3. finish the Portico
4. finish the windows
5. complete exterior painting and wood work
6. and then turn to the interior!
